An Anatomy of Our Candles

Fragrance

All our fragrance oils are 100% phthalate free and free from all carcinogens and toxins going above and beyond the strict RIFM (Research Institute for Fragrance Materials) standards. Additionally, they also adhere to California Prop 65 list of naturally occurring and synthetic chemicals to avoid.

Wax

We use 100% soy wax in our candles.

Soy wax is a vegetable wax, natural and biodegradable.  It is non-toxic, having no carcinogens or pollutants so it does not give off any harmful by-products. As a result, soy wax does not produce black soot that can stain walls and curtains. It also has a lower melt point so it burns slower, longer and has a strong scent throw. It is a soft wax that can be easily washed with soap and water.

Soybeans are harvested, cleaned, cracked, de-hulled and then hydrogenated to become a solid at room temperature. The remaining husks of the beans are not wasted but used as animal feed.

Interesting note: USA labeling guidelines state that candles need only have 51% soy wax to be labeled as a soy candle. That means that a candle labeled Soy can actually have 49% parrafin or other wax in it.

Cork Lid

Cork is a sustainable and eco-friendly product that biodegrades completely and can be easily recycled without producing any toxic residues.  Cork harvesting is an ancient tradition, using the same method for thousands of years. The bark of the cork oak tree is split off the trunk without damaging the rest of the tree. Each tree can live between 150-250 years and is harvested every 9-12 years. This process improves the tree’s health and vigor over the years. After harvest, as the bark grows back, each tree sucks up to 5 times more carbon from the atmosphere. This carbon is then locked away in the bark. As a result, cork trees absorb tons of CO2 from the atmosphere helping to clean the earth’s air.

WICK

We use 100% natural and renewable hemp wicks.  We choose to use hemp wicks because they provide a clean and steady burn, producing minimal soot and smoke when compared to cotton wicks. Hemp is a sustainable and renewable resource that grows quickly, uses less water and requires fewer pesticides and fertilizers compared to cotton crops. Hemp wicks are biodegradable breaking down naturally over time, reducing their environmental impact.
